Rheological Characterisation of blends of Primary and Secondary Sludge

چکیده
An understanding of sludge rheology during anaerobic digestion can improve digester performance, particularly with regards to mixing. However, the “black box” nature of digesters limits the knowledge on sludge flow behaviour, once it enters the digester. A study on the flow properties (i.e. apparent viscosity and yield stress) as well as the yielding and restructuring behaviour of primary, secondary and blends of primary and secondary sludge was carried out. Primary and secondary sludge feeds to the anaerobic digester were obtained from the Mount Martha wastewater treatment plant, Mornington Peninsula (Victoria, Australia). The Herschel-Bulkley model was used to determine flow properties of these individual sludge feeds at approximately same total solids concentration (5% TS). Creep tests (below and above yield stress) and shear stress sweep tests (at various times of rest from 60 to 3600s) were conducted to study the yielding and restructuring behaviour of the individual sludge types. Primary sludge (5% TS) was then mixed with secondary sludge (5% TS) at different ratios (0 – 80%) and their flow properties analyzed at 20 oC as sludge blends, mimicking conditions within an anaerobic digester. The HerschelBulkley model was used to model their flow properties. It was shown that primary sludge acted as a jammed material whose rheological parameters (apparent viscosity, yield stress and shear thinning properties) were lower than secondary sludge at approximately the same total solids concentration. The viscosity, yield stress and shear thinning behaviour of blends of inlet sludge feed increased with increasing ratio of secondary sludge to primary sludge. Rheological Characteristics of a Mixture of Primary and Secondary Municipal Sludge
Municipal wastewater sludges are complex fluids displaying non-Newtonian characteristics. Whilst rheological properties of sludges are very important for the design and operation of wastewater treatment facilities, there is a lack of information regarding these properties, particularly for mixtures of primary and secondary sludges. The rheology of wastewater treatment sludge has been widely stu...
متن کاملIn-line rheological characterisation of wastewater sludges using non-invasive ultrasound sensor technology
The performance of a new ultrasound transducer, which can measure velocity profiles non-invasively through high-grade stainless steel pipes, was evaluated for the first time with secondary wastewater sludges. This work is a follow-up study on the feasibility work initially done by the same authors. In-line process control based on accurate rheological characterisation for treated wastewater slu...

In this work, the compatibility and crystallinity of low density polyethylene (LDPE) and polybutene-1 (PB-1) blends were studied. Various blends of LDPE/PB-1 containing 5, 10 and 20 wt.% PB-1 were prepared in a corotating twin-screw extruder and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), shear oscillation rheology and wide-angle X-ray diffractometry (WAXD). A matrix-droplet morphology...
متن کاملRheology of a primary and secondary sewage sludge mixture: dependency on temperature and solid concentration.
The main objective of this study was to investigate the rheology of mixed primary and secondary sludge and its dependency on solid content and temperature. Results of this study showed that the temperature and solid concentration are critical parameters affecting the mixed sludge rheology. It was found that the yield stress increases with an increase in the sludge solid content and decreases wi...
متن کاملDetermination of Bio-Oxidation Energy Released by Thermophiles in Secondary and Mixed Bio-Solids
Reaction constants and heat release during thermophilic aerobic digestion of typical secondary and mixed sludges were determined. Maximum reaction constant, determined by measuring the amounts of biodegradable volatile suspended solids (bVSS) removed, occurred in the temperature range of 55-60 ºC. Measurement of heat releases were carried out, at the same range, by the aid of a temperature ...
